Lancaster graduate start-up business marching to success

29 October 2012

A Lancaster based start-up business, founded by recent Lancaster University Management School graduate Paul Hodges, has been nominated for a Smarta 100 award. Smarta described it as ‘one of the most resourceful, original, exciting and disruptive small businesses in the UK’.

‌The Grand Old Duke of Pork, a bespoke artisan sausage business, was set up by Paul in June 2012. The business lets customers choose and design new sausage flavour combinations from a selection of 50 fresh quality ingredients. These are then created by the Grand Old Duke himself and delivered straight to their door.

‌Paul graduated from Lancaster with a BA (Hons) Management and Entrepreneurship degree and worked as a project administrator with IEED – the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development – on placement said:

“During my degree and placement year with IEED I had constant access to innovative entrepreneurs. This gave me a practical insight into the reality of small business management and inspired me to set up my own business once I’d graduated.”

Paul's business continues to grow from strength to strength. , Associate Dean for Enterprise at LUMS said:

“We are all very proud of Paul and are thrilled that the Smarta 100 Awards have given him the recognition his business deserves. We really hope people get behind this innovative idea and show him some support by voting for him.”
